How 70-Year-Old Ugandan Woman Gave Birth To Twins
A 70-year-old woman from Uganda has welcomed the birth of twins, terming it a miraculous event, according to her doctor’s announcement on Thursday. Safina Namukwaya expressed her immense happiness at the arrival of the twins, born on Wednesday at a medical facility in the capital city of Kampala, where she had undergone fertility treatment.
Doctor Edward Tamale Sali, overseeing her pregnancy and delivery, described the event as an extraordinary achievement, delivering twins to Africa’s oldest mother at the age of 70.

The mother and the newborns, a boy and a girl, are currently under the care of the Women’s Hospital International and Fertility Centre, founded by Dr. Sali, and are reported to be in good health.
Living in the rural area of Masaka, approximately 120 kilometers west of Kampala, Namukwaya expressed her joy, especially considering societal perceptions of her age and ability to bear and care for children. In a phone interview with AFP, she shared her disbelief at the miraculous nature of giving birth to twins at an age when she is commonly considered frail and unable to undergo pregnancy and childbirth.
Namukwaya mentioned that she had previously given birth to a girl in 2020, overcoming societal stigmas that labeled her a “cursed woman” due to her earlier struggles with childbearing. Having lost her first husband in 1992 and meeting her current partner in 1996, she highlighted her partner’s absence during her hospital stay for the delivery, expressing concerns that he might be unhappy about the birth of twins, as men often prefer not to acknowledge the responsibility of multiple children.
