How Meghan Markle Discovered She Was 43 Percent Nigerian

Prince Harry made reference to Meghan Markle’s Nigerian heritage during the opening ceremony of the Invictus Games in Germany.

The 2023 games welcomed delegations from Nigeria, Colombia, and Israel, marking their first-ever participation in the event for injured veterans held in Düsseldorf, Germany this month.

Founded by Prince Harry in 2014, the Invictus Games have become a central focus of his work since his departure from the royal family in 2020. While Prince Harry attended the opening events alone, it is expected that Meghan will join him for the closing ceremony on September 16.

Prince Harry’s mention of Meghan’s connection to Nigeria was met with applause and excitement from the crowd, including the Nigerian delegation, at the Merkur Spiel-Arena on September 9.

He expressed enthusiasm for the inclusion of new nations, stating, “We’re really excited to have new nations join us. Let’s hear it for Colombia, Israel, and Nigeria.” He humorously added, “Now, I’m not saying we play favorites in our home, but since my wife discovered she is of Nigerian descent, it’s likely to get a little bit more competitive this year!”

Meghan’s revelation of her Nigerian heritage came to light during her award-winning podcast, Archetypes, in 2022. The podcast aimed to explore and challenge labels that can hinder women’s progress.

During an episode addressing the “angry black woman” stereotype, Meghan discussed her genealogical background with celebrity interviewer Ziwe. She revealed, “I just had my genealogy done a couple of years ago,” to which Ziwe responded with curiosity.

Meghan shared, “Forty-three percent Nigerian,” explaining her desire to delve deeper into her heritage and the surprised reactions she received from Nigerian women upon learning about her ancestry.

Although Meghan hasn’t made a public visit to Nigeria during her marriage, Africa holds a special place in her heart, having played a significant role in her early relationship with Prince Harry. Meghan has openly addressed her racial identity and how it evolved after marrying into the royal family in 2018. In an episode of Archetypes featuring pop star Mariah Carey, Meghan discussed society’s perception of mixed-race women. She highlighted the unique experiences of light-skinned mixed-race individuals and how her treatment changed once her relationship with Prince Harry became public.

Since stepping away from their royal duties, both Meghan and Harry have dedicated part of their philanthropic efforts to supporting women of color. Their work reflects a commitment to addressing issues related to race and promoting inclusivity and equity.
