Despite tensions and a strained relationship at times, Shaibu remained steadfast in his support for Obaseki’s re-election. He emphasized that his loyalty was not based on materialistic motives but rather on the belief that it was crucial for the smooth running of the state. Shaibu explained that even when denied his rightful entitlements, such as medical and furniture allowances, he continued to stand by the governor.

The former deputy governor went further to describe how he abstained from financial transactions in government, focusing only on his salary and official overheads. He even used his personal vehicle, purchased during his time in the House of Representatives, as his official car for the first three years of his tenure.

Shaibu’s unwavering loyalty came at a personal cost. He refrained from enjoying several benefits available to him in his position, including the use of government vehicles, medical allowances, and other perks. In his words, he “lived in his house” for eight years, choosing to forgo the comfort and privileges typically enjoyed by someone in his office.

Shaibu also addressed his continued support for Obaseki’s second term, emphasizing that his decision was rooted in principle, rather than a desire for material benefits. He stated that had he been driven by self-interest, he would have sided with former Governor Oshiomhole to claim his due, but he chose to remain loyal for the greater good of Edo State.
