IGP Cracks Down On Imo Police As Investigation Into Seized Cars Begins

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has initiated an investigation into allegations of misconduct by officers from the Imo State Police Command. The investigation follows a complaint by car dealer Anthony Osayande, who accused a police team led by John Ebute of raiding his dealership in Edo State, seizing five luxury vehicles, and arresting six of his staff members.

The incident, which took place on October 17, 2024, occurred while Osayande was on a business trip. He received a call from one of his salesmen, who informed him that police officers had arrived at his car dealership. Osayande said that when he contacted the officers, they identified themselves as members of the State CID in Benin City and requested his attention. However, he overheard instructions to arrest his staff, and upon returning to the dealership, he discovered that the officers had taken five high-end vehicles—valued at N132 million—and detained his employees.

The stolen cars included a white 2013 Lexus RX, a black 2010 Lexus RX, a 2015 pencil-colored Lexus RX, and two 2013 white Mercedes Benz GLK SUVs. Osayande initially went to the Edo State CID to inquire about the officers but learned that the policemen were actually from the Imo State Police Command.

Osayande’s lawyer submitted a petition to the Inspector General of Police, and as a result, a formal investigation was launched. A communication from the IGP’s office has directed the DCP of the IGP Monitoring Unit at Force Headquarters to investigate the incident, while the Imo State Police were criticized for their failure to cooperate.

The Imo Police spokesperson, Henry Okoye, assured that if the vehicles were not stolen, they would be returned. He emphasized the disciplined nature of the Nigerian Police Force and reiterated that any directives would be fully followed.
