Nigeria’s sprint hurdler and world record holder, Tobi Amusan, has revealed that an injury sustained during training prevented her from successfully defending her women’s 100m hurdles title at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

According to Ireporter Online, Amusan disclosed after Thursday night’s final that she suffered a heavy fall during training camp, leaving her concerned about the condition of her knee ahead of the competition. Despite the setback, the Nigerian star managed to compete and secured a bronze medal with a time of 12.60 seconds.

The event was won by the Bahamas’ Devynne Charlton, who claimed the gold medal after clocking 12.33 seconds, while Jamaica’s Megan Simmons finished second with a time of 12.41 seconds.

Reflecting on her performance, Amusan expressed gratitude for finishing on the podium despite her physical challenges. She explained that the injury had affected her preparation but was thankful she remained competitive throughout the race.

The Nigerian athlete also disclosed that the cold weather in Glasgow compounded her difficulties, noting that she has anaemia and had to make extra efforts to stay warm before the race to manage her condition.

Amusan stated that rather than focusing on the challenges she faced, she concentrated on preparing for the event. She added that her immediate priority is to undergo medical treatment before deciding on her next competitive outing.

Her bronze medal contributed to Team Nigeria’s impressive campaign at the Games. At the latest medal standings, Nigeria occupies fifth position with a total of 16 medals, comprising eight gold, five silver and three bronze medals.

Australia continues to lead the overall medals table with 112 medals, followed by England and Canada, while hosts Scotland sit fourth ahead of Nigeria.
