Inmates At Kirikiri Custodial Centre Threaten Riot (SEE WHY)

In Kirikiri Maximum Security Custodial Centre in Apapa, Lagos, Nigerian inmates are expressing concerns about perceived racial segregation by authorities and are warning of potential riots.

Condemned Convicts (CC) claim that preferential treatment is being given to a Netherlands national, Peter Nelson, who was sentenced to death for killing three Nigerians, including his wife, daughter, and the wife’s relative at Banana Island, Lagos.

Reports suggest that the management at Kirikiri granted Nelson certain privileges, such as a private room in Block Two, contrary to regulations that mandate all condemned criminals to stay in designated cells. The inmates point out that Al-Mustapha, a former Chief Security Officer to former General Sani Abacha, lost such privileges when he was condemned to death.

The situation escalated when Ramon Adedoyin, founder of Hilton Hotel, Ile-Ife, and sentenced to death for the murder of Timothy Adegoke, a student of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, sought similar privileges. The management defended its decision, citing concerns that angry inmates might pose a threat to Nelson due to the severity of his crimes.

Inmates are now demanding that Adedoyin be granted the same privileges in Block Two or that Nelson be relocated to the section designated for condemned criminals.

They accuse Nelson of harboring disdain for Nigerian inmates and claim that he boasts about the Nigerian government’s fear of the Netherlands, alleging that this fear led to rule-breaking by the Minister of Internal Affairs and correctional service management to keep him in the privileged block.

Nelson is also accused of asserting that the Netherlands’ ambassador is pressuring the Nigerian government for his acquittal at the Supreme Court, aiming to secure his return to his home country as a free man.

The spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service, Abubakar Umar, dismissed the allegations, labeling them as false and unfounded. He noted that such claims are not uncommon in the line of duty.
