During a recent episode of the Afrobeats Intelligence Podcast, Joeboy reminisced about his days as a university student facing a three-month strike. Faced with the challenge of finding employment during this period, he embarked on a job search across Lagos, only to encounter disappointment after disappointment.
Amidst the frustration of job hunting, Joeboy found himself working as a marketer in a pure water factory, a role born out of necessity rather than choice. Reflecting on this experience, he expressed his fears of being unable to secure a lucrative job after graduation, a concern that fueled his determination to succeed in music.
“I told myself, ‘You really have to make sure you make it [in the music industry],’” Joeboy recounted.
Describing his journey as nothing short of miraculous, Joeboy highlighted the skepticism surrounding his musical aspirations, with some advising against his signing by former label boss Mr Eazi. However, against the odds, Joeboy found himself signed to Empawa, where his music career soared to new heights.
The singer emphasized that his rise to fame surpassed even his own expectations, with his parents initially harboring doubts about his chosen path. Yet, with perseverance and resilience, Joeboy defied the odds and carved out a niche for himself in the competitive music industry.
Now, having recently launched his own record label, Young Legend, Joeboy reflects on his journey with gratitude and pride. He describes his label deal as the best in Afrobeats history in Nigeria, a testament to his unwavering commitment to his craft and his determination to inspire others through his music.
Joeboy’s story serves as a reminder that success often arises from the most unlikely of circumstances. His journey from the confines of a pure water factory to the pinnacle of music stardom is a testament to the power of perseverance, passion, and unwavering belief in one’s dreams.
