This decision comes following a contentious exchange between the Manhattan district attorney’s office and Trump’s legal team regarding the disclosure of tens of thousands of documents provided by the Department of Justice this month.

A hearing scheduled for March 25 will specifically address the circumstances surrounding the recent document disclosures and Trump’s motions seeking dismissal of the case and sanctions against District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office for alleged discovery violations.

In a statement issued on Friday, Judge Juan Merchan acknowledged the significant factual questions that need resolution before ruling on Trump’s motion, emphasizing the necessity for a prompt hearing.

Merchan adjourned the trial for 30 days from the date of the announcement, with consent from the prosecution. He indicated that the new trial date, if necessary, would be determined following the hearing on Trump’s motion.

Legal experts suggest that the delay reflects Merchan’s concerns regarding the document production dispute, indicating his seriousness in addressing the defense’s allegations.

The judge instructed the parties, including Trump, to refrain from scheduling conflicting commitments during the 30-day postponement period. Additionally, they are required to submit a detailed timeline of events related to document requests and productions from the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York by March 21.

Trump faces 34 counts of falsifying business records related to reimbursements made to his former lawyer Michael Cohen for hush money payments to an adult film star, Stormy Daniels, alleging an affair with Trump before the 2016 election. Trump has pleaded not guilty and denied the affair.
