The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Federal Government under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership find themselves locked in a contentious battle over the implementation of a new national minimum wage.

The NLC contends that a revised wage is imperative due to the prevailing economic challenges confronting the nation. Despite scaling down their initial demand from ₦615,000 to ₦497,000, the FG remains steadfast in proposing a minimum wage of ₦57,000.

Here are ten African countries with the highest minimum wage, based on a report by The Nation:

1. Seychelles: Seychelles leads the continent with a minimum wage of $465.4, securing the 38th position globally.

2. Libya: Following closely is Libya, with a minimum wage of $321.83, placing 45th worldwide.

3. Morocco: Morocco holds the third spot, boasting a minimum wage of $314.7. It ranks 47th on the global scale.

4. Gabon: With a minimum wage of $270.5, Gabon occupies the 50th position internationally.

5. Equatorial Guinea: Ranking fifth in Africa, Equatorial Guinea’s minimum wage stands at $211.54, placing it 58th globally.

6. Algeria: Algeria comes next with a national minimum wage of $140.14, securing the 72nd position worldwide.

7. Cape Verde: The country ranks seventh, with a minimum wage of $139.46, and stands 73rd globally.

8. Kenya: Known for its tourism, Kenya’s national minimum wage is $130.57, positioning it 75th globally.

9. Mozambique: Mozambique claims the ninth spot in Africa, with a minimum wage of $113.8, ranking 79th worldwide.

10. Lesotho: Completing the top ten is Lesotho, with a national minimum wage of $109.62. It stands 80th globally.
