Giwa’s tragic demise on October 19, 1986, following a fatal letter bomb attack in his Lagos office, remains one of Nigeria’s most notorious and unresolved murder cases, casting a long shadow over the nation’s history.

Presiding over the case, Justice Inyang Edem Ekwo delivered a resolute judgment, underscoring the AGF’s pivotal role in ensuring justice for slain media figures like Giwa and holding perpetrators accountable under the law.

The court’s ruling extends beyond Giwa’s case, mandating a comprehensive investigation and prosecution of all individuals implicated in the targeted killings of journalists while carrying out their lawful duties.

Initiated by the Incorporated Trustees of Media Rights Agenda (MRA), the legal action sought to uphold the fundamental rights of media practitioners to safety, as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution and African Charters on Human Rights.

In his decisive pronouncement, Justice Ekwo invoked constitutional provisions and international human rights standards, stressing the imperative of safeguarding journalists’ lives in the discharge of their duties.

This landmark judgment not only signals a significant breakthrough in the quest for justice for Dele Giwa and other slain journalists but also marks a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s commitment to combating impunity and ensuring the safety of media professionals nationwide.
