Kano Declares September 1 Public Holiday

The Kano State Government has declared Tuesday, September 1, 2026, a public holiday for civil servants across the state to enable residents to participate in the annual Takutaha celebration.

According to Ireporter Online, the decision was approved by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and communicated to commissioners, permanent secretaries and heads of government agencies through an official circular.

The directive was issued in Circular No. 7/2026, signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Establishment Directorate in the Office of the Head of the Civil Service, Abba A. Danguguwa, on behalf of the Head of Service.

The holiday coincides with the 19th day of Rabi’ul Awwal in the Islamic calendar and forms part of Kano’s longstanding religious and cultural traditions.

Takutaha is observed annually as part of activities marking the seventh-day naming ceremony associated with the birth of Prophet Muhammad (SAW). The celebration typically draws residents and visitors who participate in religious activities and traditional processions across the ancient city.

During the event, participants are often seen dressed in traditional attire while moving in groups through different parts of the city, offering prayers and praises.

The state government encouraged workers to take advantage of the holiday for prayers, reflection and supplication for peace, progress and prosperity in Kano State and Nigeria.
