Kano Government Halts Turbaning Ceremony: Suspends Bichi Emir’s Brother’s Installation
In a stunning development, the Kano State Government has intervened to suspend the eagerly awaited turbaning ceremony of Salisu Ado Bayero, slated to become a district head within the Bichi Emirate. The directive, communicated through the Ministry for Local Government, has halted the proceedings scheduled for March 1, casting a shadow over the anticipated event.
The decision, conveyed via a letter from the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Ibrahim M Kabara, acting on behalf of Deputy Governor Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam, cited “certain exigencies at the moment” as the rationale behind the suspension.
The letter reads, “I am instructed to convey the government’s directives to suspend the exercise due to exigencies at the moment,” referencing the communication received from the Emirate Council regarding Salisu Ado Bayero’s turbaning ceremony.
Confirmation of the suspension was provided by Ibrahim Yakasai, the Secretary of the Emirate Council, who redirected inquiries back to the Ministry for Local Government, the initiating body of the directive.
Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor, Ibrahim Garba, clarified that such appointments necessitate official clearance from the government before proceeding, emphasizing that the suspension is a procedural measure, not an act of hostility towards the Bichi Emirate or any other emirate in the state.
Garba reassured that similar directives have been issued to other emirates, reflecting the government’s commitment to upholding royal protocols and traditions.
This development unfolds amidst ongoing deliberations surrounding the status of new emirates in Kano State and the potential reinstatement of the deposed Emir Muhammadu Sanusi. While some factions advocate for the review of deposition and appointment laws to reinstate Sanusi and dissolve new emirates, others oppose such actions, citing the positive impact of the emirates on the region.
As uncertainty looms over Salisu Ado Bayero’s turbaning ceremony, the suspension underscores the complex dynamics surrounding traditional institutions in Kano State, hinting at deeper underlying tensions and political intricacies.
