Kano Lawmakers Reveal Reasons For Leaving NNPP For APC

Twenty-two members of the Kano State House of Assembly, including Speaker Jibril Falgore, formally defected from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday, signaling a major political realignment in the state. According to Ireporter Online, the move gives the APC a dominant presence in the House, controlling 36 of the 40 seats.

Speaking after the plenary session, Majority Leader Lawan Hussaini stated that the defection followed extensive consultations and was aimed at fostering peace, unity, and development in Kano. He emphasized that the decision was unanimous and motivated by the interest of the state’s residents, rather than personal ambitions.

Hussaini added that aligning with the ruling party at the federal level would enable Kano to attract increased attention and access benefits similar to those enjoyed by other states. During the session, lawmakers also considered a bill to amend the Kano State House of Assembly Service Commission Law, intended to strengthen legislative operations and enhance service delivery.

The defecting lawmakers, including several principal officers, issued a joint statement affirming that the move was a collective decision for political stability and progress, urging residents to remain calm while pledging continued commitment to unity, peace, and good governance.

With this development, the APC’s dominance in the House is now overwhelming, leaving the NNPP with only two seats.
