The incident unfolded early in the morning when an arsonist set ablaze the place of worship, trapping worshippers inside.
According to local sources, among the victims were six adults, one youth, and one minor. The attack left a total of 32 individuals injured, with 28 of them sustaining severe injuries requiring hospitalization, while four had minor injuries.
Speaking about the tragic aftermath, a witness shared, “Right from when the incident happened till this moment, about eight persons have died. We have buried two while six others are being conveyed for burial.” The victims were rushed to Murtala Specialist Hospital, where the majority were admitted to the emergency unit, with some later transferred to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital for further treatment.
Confirming the casualties, Assistant Inspector General of Police, Umar Sanda, visited the hospital where the victims were receiving treatment. Sanda clarified that the incident was not linked to terrorism but rather stemmed from a dispute over inheritance distribution. The assailant, dissatisfied with the distribution, resorted to violence, using a locally made bomb in the attack.
“This is really unfortunate,” Sanda expressed, lamenting the loss of lives in the tragic event. Presently, the suspect is in custody and cooperating with authorities, providing valuable information about the incident.
The community is left in shock and mourning following the senseless act of violence perpetrated within the sanctuary of worship. As investigations continue, authorities are striving to bring justice to the victims and their families while ensuring the safety and security of all citizens.
