Lagos APC GAC Convenes Emergency Meeting Over Obasa Fate

The meeting will take place at Lagos House Marina, the official residence of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. As the highest decision-making body in Lagos APC, GAC’s resolutions are binding on party members. The council is chaired by Pa Tajudeen Olusi, with President Bola Tinubu serving as a lifetime patron.

This comes just two weeks after a similar meeting at the same venue, following the controversial removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa by 32 out of 40 Assembly members on January 13, 2025. Obasa was ousted in absentia over allegations of financial misconduct, high-handedness, and abuse of office, with his deputy, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, appointed as the new Speaker.

The removal has sparked divisions within the GAC and the APC, with conflicting views from party leaders. While some members, such as Senator Anthony Adefuye, described Obasa’s removal as illegal, others, including Musiliu Obanikoro, dismissed such claims. GAC member Muraina Taiwo also criticized the Assembly for reconvening during recess to execute the removal.

GAC Secretary, Mutiu Are, has downplayed the crisis, calling it a “family affair” that will be resolved internally. However, with tensions rising, today’s meeting is expected to play a key role in determining Obasa’s fate and restoring stability within the party.
