The passing of Ondo state governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, serves as a poignant reminder of other governors who met their demise while in office in Nigeria.

Oluwarotimi Akeredolu

Rotimi Akeredolu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), former president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), and former Attorney General of Ondo State, served as the governor of Ondo State for a second term before his passing.

Affectionately known as “Aketi” by friends and admirers, he was a multifaceted leader recognized by many of his peers for his unwavering personal convictions.

At the time of his demise, Akeredolu held the position of Chairman of the Southern Governors’ Forum, a collective comprising governors from the 17 states in Southern Nigeria.

Patrick Yakowa

Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa held the position of governor of Kaduna State from 2010 until 2012 when he tragically lost his life in a helicopter crash.

The fatal incident occurred in Ogbia Creek, Bayelsa state in 2012, claiming the lives of Yakowa and five others.

Yakowa initially assumed the role of deputy governor in July 2005 and later returned to serve as Kaduna’s deputy governor after winning the April 2007 election. On May 20, 2010, he was sworn in as governor, succeeding former Governor Namadi Sambo, who had taken the oath of office as vice president the day before.

Mamman Bello Ali

Mamman Bello Ali served as the representative for Yobe South Senatorial District from 1999 to 2007, concurrently holding the position of chairman of the Senate Committee on Public Account during that period.

In 2007, he successfully contested and emerged victorious in the Yobe governorship election under the now-defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP). His tenure as governor continued until his passing in 2009.

Tragically, Mamman Bello Ali succumbed to leukemia while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Florida, United States.

Shehu Kangiwa

Shehu Kangiwa met his demise in a polo accident in January 1982 while serving as the governor of Sokoto State. Kangiwa, affectionately known as the ‘Smiling Governor,’ was elected under the National Party of Nigeria (NPN).

Following his tragic passing, his deputy, Garba Nadama, assumed the role of Sokoto governor until November 1983, when Muhammadu Buhari seized power in a military coup.

Kangiwa, who left behind nine children, lost his life in November 1981 during a polo match in the Georgian League in Kaduna, falling from a horse.

In 1982, Unisteel Ltd. established The Shehu Kangiwa Cup in his memory, a cup now sponsored by the Sokoto State Government.
