Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Lula stated, “If he taxes Brazilian products, Brazil will respond in kind by taxing U.S. exports.” However, he stressed that his priority is strengthening trade relations with the United States, Brazil’s second-largest trading partner after China.

“I want to respect the United States, and I expect Trump to respect Brazil,” the Brazilian leader added.

Lula also criticized Trump’s past remarks about reclaiming the Panama Canal and acquiring Greenland, calling for respect for national sovereignty. Additionally, he expressed concerns about rising threats to democracy, warning, “Either we uphold democracy, or we risk more authoritarian regimes surpassing even those of Hitler and fascism.”

Addressing climate concerns ahead of Brazil’s hosting of the COP30 summit in November, Lula condemned Trump’s withdrawal from the Paris Agreement as a “setback for human civilization.” He urged wealthier nations to honor their financial commitments to developing countries in the fight against climate change, insisting on “real action rather than empty promises.”

During the wide-ranging press conference, Lula also addressed Brazil’s economic challenges, defending his government’s efforts to lower food prices and maintain fiscal responsibility. Despite recent concerns over public debt and interest rate hikes, he reassured the public that his administration is working on an ambitious credit program to boost production.

Despite his approval rating slipping to 47% according to a recent Quaest poll, Lula remained unfazed, stating, “I’m not worried about opinion polls.” He also dismissed concerns about his health following emergency surgery in December, asserting, “I have the energy of a 30-year-old.
