A 31-year-old man in Abia State, located in Nigeria’s South-east, has tragically taken his own life after reportedly losing N2.5 million in an online bet.

The individual, identified as Chukwuma Onoh, had borrowed N1.2 million from friends, combining it with his own N1.3 million to place a bet. Unfortunately, the bet did not yield the expected winnings.

Earlier on the same day, Mr. Onoh sent a WhatsApp message to a man believed to be his boss, pleading for assistance in clearing a debt of N1.2 million incurred as a result of the losses from the N2.5 million bet.

“The only option is to end my life as I cannot live with the shame. I have turned into a gambler because of no job, and right now, I am at a point if I don’t redeem my debt, I might kill myself to pay the debt,” he reportedly wrote in the WhatsApp message.

“I used N2,500,000 to place a bet and N1.2 m is not my own and if I don’t pay up today. I will be dead by the time you read this message. As I type this message, I am where I want to buy a sniper,” he added.

The individual informed Mr. Onoh that he currently lacked the funds to provide immediate assistance and suggested that the victim communicate with his creditors, asking them to “hold on” so that he could gradually settle the debts.

On Tuesday, Mr. Onoh posted a suicide note on his Facebook page, prompting some of his friends to reach out to him.

“Today is my last day on earth! I (am) going to meet my maker,” he wrote without giving a reason.

Afterward, he was swiftly taken to Madonna Hospital Umuahia by friends, but unfortunately, he was pronounced dead by the attending doctors.

A circulating video clip on social media captured the moments when he received medical attention at the hospital.

Confirming the incident, one of his friends, Chisom Ibeako, expressed heartbreak, stating that she watched the victim pass away at the hospital despite the efforts made by doctors and nurses to revive him. She expressed surprise that despite his frequent efforts to mobilize funds for people in need, he chose to take his own life, expressing regret that she did not see his Facebook post in time.

“Some of his friends who saw his post first thought it was a joke until he did a live video. But as at the time, he has already taken the sniper,” she said.

Ms. Ibeako mentioned that the victim had not been sharing his struggles with his friends, and based on her discussions with the late Onoh’s sisters at the hospital, he had also not confided in his family members.

She added that despite being a university graduate, the victim was not known to be employed in any specific job.

Sniper, a highly toxic pesticide, has unfortunately become a method employed by some Nigerians for suicide.

In response to inquiries on Wednesday morning, the police spokesperson in Abia State, Maureen Chinaka, mentioned that she was currently attending a conference outside the state and would not be able to comment on the incident at the moment.

“I will get back to you later,” said Ms Chinaka, an assistant superintendent of police.
