Medical Guild Condemns Harassment Of Doctors, Calls For Urgent Reforms
The Medical Guild, representing all medical and dental practitioners employed by the Lagos State government, has voiced significant concerns over the rising harassment of doctors by various regulatory agencies…READ MORE…
Speaking to journalists in Lagos in anticipation of its Annual Scientific Conference, the Guild highlighted how the actions of organizations such as the Police, the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the Consumer Protection Agency are adversely affecting medical practice in the state.
Dr. Moruf Abdulsalam, the Chairman of the Medical Guild, and General Secretary Dr. Adekunle Akinade emphasized that the theme of the conference, “When the Doctor is the Patient: A Critical Appraisal of the Hippocratic Values in Medical Practice,” aims to bring together experts, stakeholders, and medical professionals to discuss the inherent connection among healthcare providers and the urgent need to shield doctors from unwarranted harassment.
They pointed out that a significant feature of the conference will be a panel discussion titled “Navigating the Complex Web of Oversight: The Impact of Multiple Watchdogs on Medical Practice.”
The Guild criticized the disturbing trend of multiple regulatory bodies exercising authority that should be reserved for the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN). They argued that routine medical errors and professional misconduct, which should ideally be handled by the MDCN, are now being criminalized by other agencies. “This overlap leads to increased anxiety, defensive medical practices, and a decline in motivation among doctors,” they stated.
Dr. Abdulsalam described the situation as “a direct affront to the medical profession” and highlighted that it contributes to the rising attrition rate of doctors in Nigeria. “Doctors are facing intimidation, harassment, and prosecution from agencies lacking the expertise to evaluate medical practice issues. This must come to an end,” he asserted.
To address these challenges, the Guild has assembled a panel of experts, including a medical law authority, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for Lagos State, a representative from the MDCN, and a member of the Lagos Police Command.
He indicated that the panel’s objective is to explore strategies to reduce harassment and restore confidence in the medical profession.
The Medical Guild also announced plans to produce a white paper at the conference’s conclusion. This document will outline recommendations aimed at tackling the escalating harassment of doctors and ensuring that the MDCN retains its role as the primary authority in adjudicating professional matters in medical practice.
“The white paper will be presented to the Lagos State Government and relevant authorities in an effort to advocate for policy reforms that safeguard the rights and well-being of medical professionals,” they stated.
The Guild hopes that the outcomes of this conference will signify a crucial turning point for medical practice in Lagos, allowing doctors to concentrate on saving lives without the fear of harassment or intimidation.
