Military Top Leadership Told To Resign Over Kaduna Village Bombing

“This is irresponsible,” he said on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Tuesday, lamenting that the military which ought to protect Nigerians against external threats was killing the people.

Yusuf said in other climes, all military chiefs would have tendered their resignation letters over the accident which has thrown the country into mourning.

“They will all resign; everybody in the chain of command will be fired. The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), everybody will go and the President will cut his trip and return home,” he said.

President Bola Tinubu appointed a new set of service chiefs in June, just three weeks into his role as the Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces. Emphasizing his earlier point, the analyst insisted that all top officials, including the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), the GOC, and other operatives, should resign.

General Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff, and Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff, visited the families of the deceased victims and those injured in hospitals in Kaduna on Tuesday. They expressed regret over the unfortunate incident, apologized to the people of the state, and assured them that such accidental airstrikes would not happen again.

In response to the incident, President Bola Tinubu extended condolences to the people of the state and called for an investigation. However, Prof Usman Yusuf argued that the Army should not investigate itself. He proposed the formation of a high-powered, independent committee led by a retired Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), with representation from service chiefs.

Yusuf pointed out the potential impact on foreign relations, suggesting that other countries might be reluctant to sell arms to the Nigerian military if such incidents continue. He emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in the investigation process.

The accidental airstrike on Sunday had initially led to confusion, with the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) denying responsibility. Subsequently, the Kaduna State Government stated that the Army had taken responsibility for the mistake, explaining that terrorists had sometimes embedded themselves among civilians.
