Asaba, May 21, 2025 — In a pivotal address at the South South Monarchs Forum, held in Asaba, Engr. Abubakar Momoh, FNSE, Honourable Minister of Niger Delta Development, reaffirmed the federal government’s unwavering commitment to the advancement and prosperity of the Niger Delta region. The minister’s speech highlighted critical initiatives under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, emphasizing the importance of peace, infrastructure development, and youth empowerment.

Acknowledging the Role of Traditional Rulers

Minister Momoh commenced his speech by recognizing the significant contributions of traditional rulers in fostering peace and development. He praised their unwavering commitment to the region’s well-being and urged them to leverage their influence to promote unity and reconciliation within their communities.

“It is an immense honor and privilege to stand before this esteemed gathering of our revered traditional rulers,” Minister Momoh stated. “Your presence here today is a testament to your unwavering commitment to the peace and development of our beloved Niger Delta region.”

Commitment to Development: The Renewed Hope Agenda

The minister outlined the federal government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, centered on eight presidential priorities: Economic Reform, Peace and Prosperity, Food Security, Sustainable Development, Infrastructure and Transportation, Social Investment, Economic Diversification, and Service Delivery. Highlighting key infrastructure projects, he emphasized the ongoing efforts to improve transportation networks and address infrastructural deficiencies.

“The resumption of work on failed sections of the East-West Road, especially from Eleme Junction to Onne Junction, the recent flag off of the construction of the Lagos to Calabar Coastal Road project, and the reconstruction of failed portions of the Abuja-Benin Highway are sure testaments to the unwavering commitment of this administration,” he noted.

The Need for Peace

Minister Momoh underscored the vital role of peace as a foundation for sustainable development. He called upon the traditional rulers to champion peacebuilding efforts, stressing that conflicts and unrest have historically hindered the region’s progress.

“Peace is the bedrock upon which development and prosperity are built. Without peace, our efforts to improve infrastructure, education, healthcare, and overall quality of life will be in vain,” he said. “I call upon you, our esteemed monarchs, to leverage your influence and moral authority to promote dialogue, reconciliation, and unity among our communities.”

Support for Government Policies

The minister highlighted various government policies and initiatives designed to address the unique challenges of the Niger Delta, including infrastructure projects, economic empowerment programs, and environmental sustainability efforts. He emphasized the need for active support and cooperation from traditional leaders to ensure these policies’ success.

Empowering the Youth

Addressing the issue of youth involvement in criminal activities, the minister highlighted the administration’s commitment to investing in education, vocational training, and entrepreneurship programs. He called on the traditional rulers to inspire and guide the youth towards positive contributions to society.

“Our youth are the future of the Niger Delta, and their potential is boundless. However, the prevalence of criminal activities among some of our young people is a grave concern,” he remarked. “It is imperative that we address the root causes of this criminality. Your role in this endeavor cannot be overstated.”
