Mixed Reactions As States Struggle To Implement Palliatives Despite Federal Funding For Subsidy Removal

Despite the Federal Government’s allocation of N5 billion to each of the 36 states for the procurement of food items and fertilisers to alleviate the impacts of petrol subsidy removal, many states in Nigeria are facing criticism for their lack of concrete palliative plans for residents.

The situation has sparked mixed reactions among citizens, with some expressing disappointment in the effectiveness of the measures while others appreciate the efforts but call for improvements and additional strategies.

Residents in Rivers State, for instance, have raised concerns about the rollout of 17 luxury buses intended for free intra-state transportation as a means of cushioning the effects of the fuel subsidy removal.

While some residents scored the initiative low, citing operational issues such as frequent breakdowns and limited operating hours, others stressed the need for more comprehensive palliatives that would better address the challenges faced by the population.

The mixed reviews indicate that the modus operandi of the buses may not align with the intended goals of the scheme.

A civil servant from the Ministry of Works shared his perspective on the situation, stating that the luxury buses had minimal impact on people’s suffering. He emphasized the need for higher wages, increased job opportunities, and support for agriculture and skills acquisition to truly alleviate the economic challenges faced by citizens.

Bright Jumbo, another resident, pointed out the need for tailored solutions, particularly for riverine communities involved in activities like fishing and seafood transportation. He suggested that in addition to the luxury buses, boats could be provided at various jetties to better cater to the needs of such communities.

In contrast, some residents, like entrepreneur Emmanuel Lekan, commended the efforts made by certain state governments, acknowledging that the implemented initiatives were helping to reduce the hardships caused by the subsidy removal. For example, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced a reduction in public transportation fares, which garnered praise from many residents. However, reports indicate that the fare reduction has faced challenges in implementation, with some commercial drivers not fully adhering to the announced cuts.

The responses from Nigerians reflect a mixture of skepticism and appreciation for the palliative measures being taken in response to the petrol subsidy removal. The challenges faced in implementing these measures, along with the varying impact on different segments of the population, highlight the complex nature of addressing economic challenges through palliative strategies.
