Moses Itauma, Hrgović Set For Explosive IBF Heavyweight Title Showdown

British-Nigerian heavyweight prospect Moses Itauma is set to face Croatian contender Filip Hrgović for the vacant IBF heavyweight championship at London’s O2 Arena on Saturday, August 29, with the bout scheduled for 10:30pm.

According to Ireporter Online, the 21-year-old Itauma enters the highly anticipated contest unbeaten after 14 professional fights, recording 12 victories by knockout. He made a major statement in his most recent outing by stopping former world title challenger Dillian Whyte in the opening round.

Born in Slovakia to a Nigerian father and Slovak mother, Itauma relocated to Kent during his childhood and has quickly risen through the heavyweight division.

Victory over Hrgović would place Itauma among the youngest heavyweight world champions in boxing history. He would become the second-youngest to win a heavyweight world title after Mike Tyson, who achieved the feat at the age of 20, while also becoming the youngest active world champion.

The build-up to the fight has been increasingly heated, with Hrgović repeatedly referring to Itauma as a “kid” and questioning whether the young fighter has enough experience for such a significant contest.

Itauma admitted that some of Hrgović’s comments had begun to frustrate him, particularly the Croatian’s remark that he “wakes up and hugs trees.”

The unbeaten prospect suggested that Hrgović’s attempts to unsettle him could indicate a lack of confidence ahead of the fight.

Hrgović has continued to dismiss Itauma’s credentials, recently leaving him out of his personal top five heavyweight rankings. The Croatian placed Oleksandr Usyk first, followed by Daniel Dubois, Agit Kabayel, himself and Tyson Fury.

The 34-year-old Hrgović, a 2016 Olympic bronze medallist, enters the contest with a professional record of 20 victories, one defeat and 15 knockouts. He believes his experience will prove crucial against the younger challenger.

Hrgović acknowledged Itauma’s power, speed and talent but argued that the hype surrounding the British-Nigerian fighter has gone beyond what he has achieved so far.

Despite the tension surrounding the contest, Hrgović insists he is confident in his ability to defeat Itauma and believes the fight comes at the right stage of his career.

The vacant IBF title became available after Oleksandr Usyk relinquished the championship, while Frank Sanchez agreed to step aside, allowing Itauma to enter the world-title picture much sooner than many expected.

However, Itauma insists the championship belt has not changed his motivation. For him, the priority remains defeating Hrgović and proving himself against one of the division’s established contenders.

The fight represents the biggest opportunity of Itauma’s young professional career, with victory potentially placing him among the youngest heavyweight champions in boxing history.
