Mr Ibu Gave Africa Endless Laughter” — Don Singles

According to Ireporter Online, the Chief Executive Officer of Don Singles International (DSI), Dominic Nwuzor, has described the death of renowned Nollywood comic actor, John Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu, as the end of an era, noting that the late entertainer truly “made Africa laugh.”

Nwuzor, who managed the late actor for over two decades, spoke on Sunday in Abuja while reflecting on the life and legacy of the comic legend, who passed away in March 2024. He praised Mr Ibu’s exceptional comic brilliance, saying his humour transcended borders and united audiences across Africa.

Widely referred to as “the man who made Africa laugh,” Mr Ibu earned the title through his iconic performances, particularly in the popular Mr Ibu movie series, which cemented his status as a household name across the continent. Born in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State, the late actor reportedly featured in over 200 Nollywood films and was celebrated for his unique comedic timing, expressive facial gestures and relatable portrayal of clumsy yet lovable characters.

Mr Ibu rose to continental prominence in 2004 with the release of Mr Ibu, a film that chronicles the humorous struggles of a single father and his son as they navigate life’s challenges. According to Nwuzor, the “Mr Ibu” persona became synonymous with laughter, joy and unity, touching millions of lives within and outside Africa.

Recalling their years of working together, Nwuzor said he accompanied the late actor on numerous international tours, noting that Mr Ibu’s popularity was evident in the massive crowds that welcomed him at airports across Africa. He added that the comedian was particularly adored in countries such as Ghana, South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Gambia, Gabon and Botswana, where he proudly displayed the Nigerian flag as a symbol of national pride.

Nwuzor further revealed that Mr Ibu used his influence and humour to foster peace and reconciliation, recounting an instance in Ghana where his performance helped unite two previously warring communities. He said the actor was subsequently honoured with a chieftaincy title, “Malangula I of Tamale Land,” meaning peacemaker, while he himself was named the mouthpiece of the peacemaker.

Describing Mr Ibu as a cultural ambassador, Nwuzor noted that the late actor projected Nigeria positively on the global stage and was one of the country’s most celebrated exports, earning recognition from leaders and communities across Africa. He added that Mr Ibu’s warmth, originality and authenticity endeared him to people of all ages, making him one of the continent’s most beloved comic actors of all time.

The DSI boss urged young talents to embrace mentorship and proper training to succeed in the entertainment industry, acknowledging the challenges faced by Nigerian youths due to limited infrastructure and economic constraints. He disclosed that Don Singles International is set to launch DSI Movies as a platform to nurture and showcase emerging talents in the Nigerian film industry.
