This alarming dip follows closely on the heels of the naira surpassing the N1,500 mark against the dollar in the official market, marking a distressing new low.

The persistent downward spiral of the naira underscores the immense pressure it faces despite tireless efforts by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to shore up its value. Despite extensive interventions, including foreign exchange support from AfreximBank amounting to $2.25 billion and government initiatives to settle forex obligations, the naira continues its freefall, exacerbating the nation’s already dire cost of living crisis and fueling rampant inflation.

In a stark revelation of the gravity of the situation, the naira has depreciated by over 50 percent in the past five months alone, marking an alarming rate of decline.

This unsettling trend traces back to September 2023, when the dollar first breached the N1,000 threshold in the parallel market, signaling the onset of a deepening foreign exchange crisis.

Despite the CBN’s multifaceted strategies to stem the naira’s decline, including various intervention measures, the currency’s value remains precariously unstable.

As forex turnover dwindles and the crisis deepens, urgent reassessment of stabilization strategies becomes imperative to cushion the economic impact on Nigerians and restore confidence in the local currency.
