This marks the fourth occurrence of grid collapse within the first three months of the year, leaving millions of homes and businesses without power. Reports from distribution companies (DisCos) across the country confirmed that their feeders were rendered inactive, leading to widespread blackouts.

Prior to the collapse, the grid’s output stood at 2,984 megawatts at 4 pm but plummeted to zero within an hour, with all 21 plants connected to the grid ceasing operations by 5 pm. The Azura Power Plant remained the only facility contributing to the grid, albeit with a modest output of 54 megawatts.

Major power generation plants like Egbin, Afam, Geregu, Ibom Power, Jebba, Kainji, Odukpani, and Olorunsogo, among others, remained dormant, exacerbating the electricity deficit nationwide.

This incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by Nigeria’s electricity sector despite privatization efforts aimed at revitalization. The blackout highlights the urgent need for comprehensive reforms to address the persistent issues plaguing the country’s power infrastructure.
