Nigeria High Commission Media Coordinator In Ghana Resigns

The Media Coordinator at the Nigerian High Commission in Accra, Ghana, Destiny Austine Omon, has resigned from his position, citing alleged pressure to remain silent over concerns raised by Nigerians, restrictions on media coverage and irregular payment of his official stipend.

According to Ireporter Online, Omon’s resignation took effect on August 27, 2026, with multiple sources familiar with the development confirming his departure.

In his resignation letter addressed to the Nigerian High Commissioner in Accra, Omon said his decision was influenced by what he described as growing difficulties in carrying out his responsibilities under the prevailing circumstances at the mission.

The former media coordinator particularly raised concerns about alleged pressure to remain silent on questions from Nigerians regarding a reported ₦2 billion budget allocation and related issues of transparency and accountability.

Omon explained that the situation had increasingly made it difficult for him to continue serving in the role, despite considering the communication of issues affecting Nigerians in Ghana an important responsibility.

He also expressed concerns about what he described as restrictions placed on reporting issues involving Nigerians living in the country.

According to him, the level of control over media coverage had limited his ability to effectively perform his duties and communicate legitimate concerns.

Omon maintained that credible communication should allow genuine issues affecting Nigerians to be reported responsibly and accurately without undue interference.

He further cited financial difficulties arising from what he described as low and irregular payment of his official stipend. He alleged that delays in receiving payments owed to him had affected his ability to effectively carry out his responsibilities.

Despite his concerns, Omon expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve at the mission and the experience he gained during his time as media coordinator.

He stated that he had consistently sought to perform his duties professionally and in the best interests of Nigerians and Nigeria’s image.

A source familiar with the development said Omon’s resignation should not be viewed as a rejection of the Nigerian High Commission or its diplomatic objectives.

The source explained that the former coordinator remained committed to the interests of Nigerians but believed that the circumstances surrounding his role had made it increasingly difficult for him to discharge his responsibilities effectively.

As part of his resignation, Omon offered to facilitate a smooth transition by handing over official materials, information and responsibilities in his possession.

He also wished the Nigerian High Commission continued success in its diplomatic activities, particularly its efforts to promote the welfare and interests of Nigerians residing in Ghana.
