In an official statement shared with Nairametrics, Nigerian Breweries emphasized its commitment to mitigating the impact on its workforce. Measures such as relocating and redistributing employees to the remaining seven breweries are being considered, alongside providing support and severance packages to those affected by the changes.

Sade Morgan, Corporate Affairs Director of Nigerian Breweries, underscored the necessity of this restructuring amidst ongoing economic challenges. Factors such as double-digit inflation rates, currency devaluation, and reduced consumer spending have prompted the company to streamline operations and cut costs to bolster financial stability.

The company has engaged with its unions transparently, issuing letters to the leadership of the National Union of Food, Beverage & Tobacco Employees (NUFBTE) and the Food Beverage and Tobacco Senior Staff Association (FOBTOB). These communications outlined the proposed plan and invited union leaders to collaborate on navigating the implications.

This strategic reorganization follows Nigerian Breweries’ recent disclosure to the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX) regarding its intention to raise up to ₦600 billion through a rights issue. The aim is to address financial challenges exacerbated by significant net finance expenses incurred in 2023, largely attributed to currency devaluation.

Hans Essaadi, Managing Director/CEO of Nigerian Breweries, emphasized the importance of these adjustments in adapting to the demanding business landscape. He highlighted the company’s commitment to managing costs effectively while preparing for sustainable growth.

While acknowledging the impact on affected employees, Essaadi reiterated Nigerian Breweries’ dedication to minimizing this impact through supportive measures. He also reaffirmed the company’s commitment to investing in communities to maintain strong relationships.

The reorganization plan involves optimizing production capacity at remaining breweries, many of which have recently received substantial capital investments. This approach aims to enhance efficiency and readiness for future expansions.

In addition to these strategic adjustments, Nigerian Breweries recently expanded its portfolio by acquiring an 80% stake in Distell Wines and Spirits Limited, signaling its strategic focus on diversification and long-term value creation.
