The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) revealed that these cards include a bank-enabled National ID card, a social intervention card, and an optional ECOWAS National Biometric Identity Card.
Ayodele Babalola, the Technical Adviser for Media and Communications to the Director-General of NIMC, shared this information in a statement.
“We anticipate that the bank-enabled National ID card will cater to the needs of the middle and upper segments, who typically engage with banks, within the next one or two months post-launch,” stated Babalola.
He added, “The activation of the National Safety Net Card is aimed at addressing urgent authentication needs and providing a secure platform for government services such as palliatives, particularly targeting the 25 million vulnerable Nigerians supported by current government intervention programs.”
For individuals preferring digital formats, virtual versions of all cards will be made available, albeit with limited functionalities. Additionally, ECOWAS cards will be issued as required in collaboration with the Nigerian Immigration Service.
Babalola outlined the implementation strategy, stating, “We are set to implement the following programs to streamline the issuance of general multipurpose cards: firstly, the bank-enabled national ID card in partnership with NIBSS and banks. Secondly, the social intervention card under the National Safety Net Card. And finally, the optional ECOWAS National Biometric Identity Card.”
While aiming for a possible launch in May, Babalola emphasized that the timeline is contingent upon presidential approval and finalization of crucial details.
He concluded, “The project will be facilitated by AfriGo, under the Central Bank, but ultimate decision-making lies with the President.”
