Nigerian Ports Shut Down As Workers Join Nationwide-Strike (View Details)
The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has ceased port operations nationwide in compliance with the strike directive issued by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC). The strike, which commenced on Monday, is a protest against the Federal Government’s proposal of a ₦60,000 minimum wage.
An official from MWUN, speaking to Vanguard, confirmed that all port installations, including those in Lagos, Port Harcourt, Warri, Onne, Calabar, and other locations, have been closed. The ports will remain closed until further directives are received from the national leadership of organized labor.
In a related development, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) announced that its workers have deliberately shut down Nigeria’s power grid as part of the nationwide strike. TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah, in a statement titled “Grid shutdown: Union Deliberately shuts down the National Grid,” stated that labor unions have shut down some of its transmission substations. On the power generation side, TCN reported that stations were forced to shut down some units of their generating plants.
The combined actions of MWUN and TCN highlight the widespread impact of the strike, which aims to push for better wages and working conditions for Nigerian workers.
