This directive followed a motion by Aderemi Oseni, the lawmaker representing Ibarapa East/Ido Federal Constituency in Oyo State, who voiced deep concern over frequent gas explosions, leading to numerous casualties and property damage worth billions of naira.

Oseni attributed the influx of these hazardous products to lapses in supervision by SON and NCS officials at ports and borders. He stressed the urgent need for stricter oversight to ensure only quality gas products make it into the Nigerian market.

Furthermore, Oseni called on the National Orientation Agency to launch a nationwide awareness campaign highlighting the dangers of using substandard gas cylinders and kits. This initiative aims to educate Nigerians about the importance of purchasing only certified, safe gas products.

The House acknowledged expert findings linking recurring explosions to expired and substandard gas cylinders, both imported and locally fabricated from inferior materials. The risks extend to CNG-powered vehicles, which have also been involved in explosions due to the use of subpar components.

To tackle these issues, the House has directed SON and NCS to enforce stricter importation standards, allowing only high-quality, unexpired gas cylinders, tanks, trucks, and kits into the country. Additionally, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority has been tasked with ensuring gas plants and retail outlets adhere to strict safety standards.

The House also mandated its Committees on Gas and Safety Standards to conduct an in-depth investigation into the root causes of these frequent gas explosions and propose long-term solutions.

With this resolution, the House of Representatives underscores its commitment to protecting Nigerian lives and properties. The onus now lies on relevant agencies to enforce these measures effectively, ensuring a safer environment for all.
