According to the NBS report, the average price of 1kg of locally sold rice surged to N1,340.74 in March 2024, marking an alarming 152.93 percent increase from March 2023’s N530.08.

Similarly, the price of 1kg of white garri soared by 112.34 percent year-on-year to N749.89 in March 2024, with a 3.66 percent rise from February 2024.

Yam prices followed suit, jumping by 141.25 percent year-on-year to N1,068.78 per kg, with a 5.87 percent increase from February to March 2024.

The state-by-state analysis revealed significant variations in food prices, with Niger State reporting the highest average price for 1kg of rice at N1,699.98, while Benue State recorded the lowest at N985.83.

The surge in food prices occurs against the backdrop of headline inflation and food inflation rates of 33.20 percent and 40.01 percent, respectively, as of March 2024, highlighting the severe economic strain on Nigerians.

This price surge not only reflects market volatility but also raises concerns about food security and the affordability of basic nutrition for millions of Nigerians.

Economic analysts attribute the price hike to a combination of factors, including fluctuating supply chains, currency depreciation, and the lingering effects of security challenges in food-producing regions.
