The move follows Governor Obaseki’s announcement during the recent inauguration of the Labour House in Benin City, where he emphasized the need to mitigate the adverse effects of the harsh economic conditions facing the people of the state. Previously set at ₦40,000, the increase to ₦70,000 aims to alleviate financial strains on workers.

Chris Nehikhare, the State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, confirmed the implementation of the new minimum wage, stating that May salaries have been disbursed to workers accordingly. Nehikhare highlighted the administration’s unwavering commitment to prioritizing the welfare of Edo workers.

In urging workers to remain dedicated to their duties, Nehikhare emphasized the importance of ensuring the governor’s tenure concludes positively. He also encouraged workers to reciprocate the government’s gesture by contributing effectively to the state’s development.

“The Edo State Government has paid the May salaries of workers in the state, reflecting the implementation of the ₦70,000 new minimum wage,” Nehikhare affirmed. “This is in fulfillment of the promise made by Governor Godwin Obaseki to increase the minimum wage from ₦40,000 to ₦70,000 beginning this May, as part of efforts to cushion the impacts of the harsh economy occasioned by fuel subsidy removal and other economic decisions by the Federal Government.”

He added, “It is also in furtherance of the commitment of the state government to meet its statutory obligation even before the end of the month.”

As the Edo State Government takes decisive steps to enhance workers’ welfare, many Nigerians are hopeful that similar initiatives will be replicated across the country, contributing to improved standards of living and economic stability.
