Nigerians React To President Tinubu’s Amendments To NDDC Nomination List
In a surprising turn of events, President Bola Tinubu has announced amendments to the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Board and Management nomination list, a decision that has elicited mixed reactions from Nigerians across the country. The changes come at a crucial time, as the NDDC plays a pivotal role in the development of the Niger Delta region.
One of the notable changes involves the replacement of the Ondo State Representative nominee, Mr. Victor Akinjo, with a new nominee, Hon. Otito Atikase. Similarly, the Cross River State Representative nominee, Mr. Asi Oku Okang, has been replaced by Rt. Hon. Orok Otuk Duke. These substitutions have raised questions about the criteria for such changes and the implications for the region’s representation in the NDDC.
Another significant development is the reappointment of Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, the immediate past Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the NDDC, for a second term. Dr. Ogbuku will continue in an acting capacity until the Senate confirms his reappointment. This move has sparked discussions about the performance of the NDDC under his leadership and the prospects for continuity in the commission’s initiatives.
What has particularly caught the attention of many Nigerians is the political dimension of these changes. Some argue that the earlier appointees were affiliated with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and the All Progressives Congress (APC) had vehemently opposed their nominations. The fact that social media played a role in highlighting these affiliations and influencing the amendments underscores the growing influence of digital platforms in Nigerian politics.
While some Nigerians welcome the adjustments as a necessary step towards improving the NDDC’s effectiveness, others express concerns about potential politicization of the commission. The reactions on social media platforms have been polarized, with citizens debating the impact of these changes on the Niger Delta region and its development prospects.
As President Tinubu’s administration continues to navigate the complex challenges facing the NDDC, the eyes of Nigerians remain firmly fixed on the region’s development and the role of political dynamics in shaping its future.
