Nigeria’s Predicament Severe, But Protests And Violence Not Solutions,” Says Archbishop Onuoha

Archbishop Onuoha made these remarks yesterday while inaugurating the 43rd Provincial Council Meeting at the Cathedral Church of St. Matthew, Atta, in the Ikeduru local council area of Imo State.

In his address, he acknowledged the widespread hunger and distress in the nation, noting that the current economic difficulties did not arise suddenly.

“While the situation is dire, it is not convincing that protests and violence will provide any solution,” Archbishop Onuoha stated. He cautioned against actions that could lead to a breakdown of law and order, which could be exploited by adversaries such as bandits and terrorists.

Expressing his views on governance, the Anglican cleric urged leaders to downsize their personal staff and reduce the size of their intimidating convoys. He believed that such measures would demonstrate empathy with the people and enhance confidence in government reforms.

Furthermore, Archbishop Onuoha criticized the Federal Government’s inaction concerning the unrestricted use of foreign currencies in Nigeria, which he argued undermines the nation’s sovereignty and devalues the currency.

Proposing a solution, he suggested implementing policies that penalize the use of foreign currencies outside banks and ensuring strict enforcement to stabilize the Naira and revive the economy.

Addressing recent threats by some Northern leaders to halt the movement of farm products, Archbishop Onuoha called for concerted efforts to promote farming among the Igbo people. He emphasized the need to cultivate a renewed interest in agriculture to ensure food security and reduce dependency on external sources.

In conclusion, Archbishop Onuoha urged Nigerians to unite across political, religious, and ethnic divides to confront the nation’s challenges collectively.
