Speaking at the Police Headquarters, the Speaker highlighted the global outcry as women continue to suffer from gender-based violence. He condemned the recent United Nations report, which revealed that a woman is killed every 10 minutes worldwide, describing this as an “unacceptable” and “unforgivable” trend. Abbas emphasized that swift and decisive action is necessary to curb this alarming issue.

The petition was part of the observance of the 2024 International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, under the theme “No Excuse for Violence!”

Abbas stressed the importance of unity within the National Assembly and with law enforcement agencies to address this crisis, promising strong legislative action to combat violence against women.

He further assured that the National Assembly would be actively involved in the upcoming national action plan to reduce violence against women and children. Abbas expressed the commitment of the House of Representatives to enact policies aimed at eliminating violence and ensuring the safety of women and girls in the country.

The event was attended by several prominent figures, including the Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim; the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande; and the APC National Youth Leader, Dayo Israel.
