NIMSA’s 10th Regional Convention: LAUTECH Hosts Discussions On Enhancing Medical Students’ Roles Beyond Academics

The Nigerian Medical Students Association (NIMSA) Southwest region held its 10th regional convention from September 12th to 15th at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) in Ogbomoso, Oyo State.

Themed “The 21st Century Medical Student: The NEXUS,” the convention focused on encouraging student involvement in academics, entrepreneurship, and politics.

During the event, various doctors shared insights on effective time management, political engagement, and entrepreneurial skills, urging participants to balance their academic pursuits with other important activities.

Keynote speaker Dr. Afolayan Babatunde, Immediate Past Chairman of the Medical Advisory Board at UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital and President of Inward Emmanuel Health Care Ltd., emphasized the importance of time management and innovation. He advised the students to multitask and prioritize their time effectively, viewing challenges as opportunities for growth.

Consultant pediatrician and author Dr. Kayode Olamide Simidele Valentine addressed the issue of brain drain in the medical field. He urged the government to tackle basic needs such as security, fair remuneration, and employment to enhance the medical system and retain medical professionals in Nigeria. He highlighted the need to address both pull factors (attractive conditions abroad) and push factors (insecurity, poor remuneration) that drive professionals out of the country.

Gbadamosi J. O., Chairman of the Megida Charity Foundation, delivered a goodwill message, encouraging students to remain focused on their studies while also exploring opportunities in entrepreneurship and politics to contribute to national development.

Sidiq Taofeek Shola, Chairman of the Convention’s Organizing Committee and a 500-level student at LAUTECH, expressed gratitude to the guest speakers, organizing committee, and attendees. He encouraged students to go beyond academic learning and engage in entrepreneurship and politics for holistic development.

The convention featured inter-school quiz and debate competitions, sports events, awards, networking opportunities, and interactive sessions. Attendee Alao Ayomide Omoshola praised the event as an informative and engaging experience, providing valuable insights across various fields.

Sidiq also called on the government to introduce innovative measures to help students overcome unemployment challenges by integrating entrepreneurial activities into their curricula.
