NIS Explains Why Passport Applicants Require State Of Origin Letters
In response to concerns voiced by citizens, including entrepreneur Tayo Oviosu, regarding the passport application process, the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) has clarified the necessity of providing proof of state of origin. While Tayo Oviosu criticized the requirement as impractical, particularly for those with minimal ties to their states of origin, the NIS emphasized that while proof of state of origin is indeed necessary, applicants are not obligated to physically travel to their states to obtain these documents.
The NIS underscored that the policy is aimed at streamlining the identification process and verifying the authenticity of applicants’ claims. They assured applicants that indigenship documents can be procured through alternative means closer to their places of residence, dispelling the need for physical travel to one’s state of origin.
Responding to Oviosu’s tweet, the Immigration Service reiterated the rationale behind the documentation requirements, emphasizing that each requirement is carefully considered and legally supported by government laws and policies. They clarified that various state liaison offices are empowered to issue such documents, making the process more accessible to applicants.
The NIS emphasized the importance of proving Nigerian citizenship beyond reasonable doubt, in accordance with laws and policies approved by the Federal Government. They stressed the significance of documents tying applicants to specific local government areas within the country to authenticate their citizenship claims.
Overall, the NIS aims to provide clarity and assurance to passport applicants regarding the documentation process, ensuring a smoother and more efficient application experience.
