During an interview with Arise TV, Ajaero expressed grave concerns over the deteriorating economic conditions, citing the drastic depreciation of the naira and escalating inflation as significant factors influencing the wage demand.

Ajaero underscored the stark contrast between the initial consideration of ₦200,000 as the minimum wage, when the exchange rate was around ₦800/$1, and the current economic landscape. He emphasized that if the trend of currency devaluation and inflation persists, labour may have no recourse but to demand a higher wage threshold.

The NLC president emphasized that the demand for a new minimum wage is intricately linked to the prevailing cost of living index and the harsh realities faced by Nigerian workers amidst economic turbulence.

Highlighting the procedural delays in wage negotiations, Ajaero lamented the failure of the federal government to inaugurate the new minimum wage committee promptly, leaving insufficient time for deliberations before the current wage agreement expires.

He revealed that despite the belated inauguration of the committee, there has been a glaring lack of progress, with no meetings convened to address the pressing issue, leaving little time for meaningful discussions and consensus-building.

As the clock ticks closer to the expiration of the current minimum wage agreement, Ajaero’s cautionary remarks serve as a wake-up call to policymakers and stakeholders, urging proactive measures to address the looming wage crisis and mitigate the economic hardships faced by Nigerian workers.
