NLC Stands Firm: Ready To Defy FG’s Threats, Proceeds With Planned Protests

In a bold response to the Attorney-General of the Federation’s admonitions, the NLC, through its legal representative, Femi Falana SAN, declared its unwavering commitment to addressing the nation’s socio-economic woes, despite government attempts to stifle dissent.
Asserting its stance, the NLC emphasized that previous court orders did not prohibit the exercise of fundamental freedoms, rejecting allegations of contempt raised by the government. Instead, the NLC argued that the protests were vital expressions of public concern, protected by constitutional rights and precedent legal rulings.
Highlighting past legal precedents, including the landmark Inspector-General of Police v All Nigeria Peoples Party case, the NLC underscored citizens’ entitlement to peaceful protest as a cornerstone of democracy, urging authorities to respect these rights.
Furthermore, the NLC urged the government to provide adequate security measures for the planned demonstrations, in accordance with the Police Establishment Act, underscoring the importance of upholding law and order while safeguarding citizens’ constitutional liberties.
As tensions escalate between the NLC and the government, the stage is set for a showdown between advocates for social justice and the forces of state authority. With public discontent simmering and demands for change growing louder, the NLC’s defiance signals a resolute determination to hold power to account and champion the interests of the Nigerian people.
