No Godfather Involved In Eguavoen’s Super Eagles Appointment – Amaju Pinnick

The former President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick, has said no godfather influenced the appointment of Augustine Eguavoen as the interim head coach of the Super Eagles.
Amaju Pinnick emphasized that Eguavoen’s appointment was based on merit and the exigencies of the situation.

Recall that Eguavoen stepped in as the interim coach of the Super Eagles after the NFF was unable to finalize an agreement with German coach Bruno Labbadia.

His immediate task is to lead the Super Eagles in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin and Rwanda in September.

Eguavoen led the Super Eagles to beat the Benin Republic 3-0 on Saturday, September 7, and he is expected to do the same against Rwanda at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, September 10.

Amaju Pinnick clarified that Eguavoen, in his capacity as the technical director of the Nigerian Federation, assumed the interim coaching role due to the prevailing circumstances, highlighting that this arrangement is not uncommon in the global football community.

Pinnick urged the players to look at the national flag and cultivate a deep resolve to give their all for their country.

“Eguavoen is absolutely nothing, not like that. If you remember the Shuaibu Amodu time, as a technical director, even in major teams in global football, a technical director takes charge when there is a vacuum in the coaching crew”, Amaju Pinnick told Arise News when asked if Eguavoen has a godfather.

“That is what happened. Eguavoen is still the technical director of the Nigerian Federation. If it was someone else, that person would have taken charge.

“I believe that it is more about the players, not even the coach. The players should look at that green-white-green flag, should look at that emblem and say “I want to die for Nigeria.”
