Nobody Knows Tomorrow” — Gov Otti Speaks On Labour Party Future

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has reaffirmed his commitment to the Labour Party (LP) amid growing speculation fueled by a series of defections from opposition governors to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). According to Ireporter Online, Otti made the clarification on Thursday during his monthly media briefing at the Government House in Umuahia.

When questioned by journalists about the ongoing leadership dispute within the LP, the governor emphasized his support for the party’s legally recognised leadership. “We are on the right side. We have maintained that Abure’s tenure has expired, and we went to court, which affirmed that. The court judgment confirmed that his tenure has expired and advised people to obey court decisions to save the courts from unnecessary troubles,” Otti said.

While firmly asserting his current party affiliation, the governor acknowledged that the future remains uncertain. “We are not in an election period. If an election comes, we will still run under the Labour Party, but nobody knows tomorrow. But today, I am still in the Labour Party,” he added.

Otti’s statement comes amid intensified political realignments nationwide, following the defection of two governors to the APC and speculation about potential shifts ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Recently, Otti’s faction of the Labour Party, led by Nenadi Usman, won a legal victory at the Federal High Court in Abuja, where Justice Peter Lifu declared the Usman-led national caretaker committee as the authentic leadership of the party. The court also ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise the Usman group as the official representatives of the LP.

The Julius Abure-led faction, central to the party’s internal dispute, has rejected the ruling and vowed to appeal the decision in court.
