According to industry reports, 2025 marked a milestone year for Nollywood, with female filmmakers emerging as the driving force behind the country’s cinematic achievements. These trailblazing women challenged conventional storytelling, exploring themes of power, ambition, love, and identity, while drawing record audiences to cinemas and streaming platforms.

Leading the charge was Funke Akindele, whose enduring career continues to captivate audiences. Her 2024 release, Everybody Loves Jenifa, alongside 2025’s Behind the Scenes, grossed over N1 billion and N700 million respectively, cementing her status as Nollywood’s most bankable filmmaker.

Kemi Adetiba made waves with her Netflix series, To Kill a Monkey, which combined striking visuals with nuanced political narratives, gaining recognition both locally and internationally. Omoni Oboli also strengthened Nollywood’s global reach with Love in Every Word, which amassed over 50 million views and sparked discussions on love, wealth, and modern femininity in Nigeria.

Toyin Abraham transitioned successfully from acting to directing, with her historical drama Iyalode earning over N300 million, and her directorial debut Oversabi Aunty highlighting her versatility.
