NSCDC Warns: Armed Protesters Will Face Criminal Charges From August 1
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Plateau State has announced that it will treat anyone found carrying a weapon during the upcoming nationwide protest as a criminal.
Speaking to officers and personnel in Jos on Wednesday, NSCDC Commandant Alexander Barunde emphasized the importance of maintaining order during demonstrations.
While acknowledging the citizens’ right to protest government policies, Barunde urged organizers to ensure that the protest remains peaceful and does not provide an opportunity for troublemakers to create chaos.
He warned that anyone using the protest as a cover for looting or vandalizing national and private properties would face severe consequences.
Barunde also reminded the people of Plateau to prioritize the state’s interests when participating in the protest and remain mindful of the potential uncertainties it might bring.
“I’m calling on the organisers of the planned protest not to create a restive situation or give room for mischief makers to unleash anarchy on the society.
“It must be violence-free and the protesters must eschew every negative tendency to create anarchy; there is room for dialogue with government over every concern.
“Any protester wielding weapon of any kind will be treated as a criminal element with different motive; such a person will be arrested and decisively dealt with in accordance with the law.
“Every law abiding and patriotic citizen of Plateau should have the interest of the state in dealing with the protest and the uncertainties associated with it,” he said.
In addition, Barunde instructed NSCDC officers and personnel to respect the rule of law, uphold ethical standards, and ensure the dignity of individuals while managing the protesters.
