Addressing concerns about the closure of borders and calls for their reopening, Adeniyi assured that consultations were ongoing regarding the matter, and a decision would be made once these consultations were concluded.
He emphasized the government’s commitment to promoting economic prosperity and removing obstacles hindering free trade. Adeniyi highlighted proactive measures taken to reduce checkpoints along border posts and enhance cooperation between service personnel and traders.
Acknowledging the concerns of border communities, Adeniyi stated that the service operates within the bounds of the law and operates on delegated powers. He revealed that residents’ concerns had been communicated to the President, who directed the release of confiscated food items for sale exclusively in Nigerian markets.
Adeniyi underscored the importance of collaboration with other security agencies to address challenges affecting free trade in border areas. He emphasized the need to prevent the exportation of food items amid a national emergency regarding food insufficiency, citing the Export Prohibition Act which bans the exportation of certain food items.
The Customs boss commended the synergy between the service and other security agencies and expressed gratitude to stakeholders for their support.
Adeniyi’s remarks highlight the government’s commitment to addressing border-related issues in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, with a focus on promoting economic growth and ensuring food security.
