Our Problem Is Poverty, Not Religion” — Makinde Sends Strong Message To Nigerians

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has declared that poverty, rather than religion, remains one of Nigeria’s most pressing challenges, urging citizens to prioritise the country’s economic and social problems over religious differences.

According to reports, Makinde made the remarks on Saturday in Abuja while receiving a Christian Icon Award at the 50th anniversary celebration of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).

The governor used the occasion to encourage Christians across the country to become more actively involved in politics, stressing that meaningful national transformation would require their participation in governance and public affairs.

Makinde cautioned against the tendency among some Christians to avoid politics on the grounds that it is corrupt or incompatible with their religious beliefs. He argued that withdrawing from the political process could limit their ability to contribute to the development of the country.

To reinforce his position, the governor referenced biblical accounts, particularly the story of David, who served in the palace of King Saul despite having been anointed as a future king. He suggested that the example offered a lesson for Christians who hesitate to serve under leaders with different religious beliefs.

Makinde called on Christian leaders and their followers to rise above religious divisions and actively contribute to efforts aimed at rebuilding and transforming Nigeria.

He emphasised that the hardship facing Nigerians, particularly widespread poverty, deserved urgent attention and collective action.

“Our problem is not primarily a religious one. Our problem in this country is poverty, grinding poverty,” the governor stated, stressing the need to focus on the challenges affecting the daily lives of citizens.

He maintained that addressing the country’s socioeconomic difficulties should take precedence over divisions capable of distracting Nigerians from the task of national development.
