Scheduled for April 18th, the NEC meeting has become a battleground for factions loyal to Atiku and Wike, each vying for control over the party’s structures. The rift between the two leaders deepened after Atiku overlooked Wike for the vice-presidential slot, prompting Wike’s endorsement of the All Progressives Congress candidate, Bola Tinubu, during the 2023 election.

With the looming NEC meeting, calls for urgent action against members involved in alleged anti-party activities during the 2023 election have intensified. Atiku’s camp, mobilizing independent groups affiliated with the party, seeks to sanction Wike, along with Samuel Ortom, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Okezie Ikpeazu, and others associated with the G-5 group.

However, amidst the power struggle, caution is exercised due to Ayu’s pending court case, which may delay the announcement of his replacement as National Chairman. Notably, stakeholders from the North Central region are rallying around potential candidates such as Abubakar Bukola Saraki, Gabriel Suswam, and Babangida Aliyu for Ayu’s replacement.

Meanwhile, most state chapters and independent groups affiliated with the party have submitted names of party chieftains allegedly involved in anti-party activities, adding fuel to the already heated political climate.

The agenda for the upcoming NEC meeting includes discussions on the National Chairman, constitutional amendment, 2023 review committee, state congresses, and other pertinent matters. While uncertainty looms over Ayu’s replacement amidst the ongoing court case, the NEC’s decisions are awaited with bated breath.

As the PDP braces for a pivotal moment in its internal dynamics, the outcome of the NEC meeting is poised to shape the party’s trajectory leading up to the next electoral cycle.
