Peter Obi Sounds Alarm: CBN’s 22.75% Interest Rate Spells Economic Disaster
In a bold warning, former presidential candidate Peter Obi has sounded the alarm over the recent decision by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to hike the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) to 22.75% and the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) to 45%. Obi predicts dire consequences, foreseeing exacerbated economic woes and a surge in job losses across various sectors.
Obi’s critique comes in the wake of the CBN’s move to tighten monetary policy, a decision aimed at curbing inflation but one that Obi argues will only worsen the financial strain on Nigerian households. He emphasizes the potential impact on sectors like manufacturing, heavily reliant on bank loans, and credits, warning of a looming crisis.
Expressing skepticism about the efficacy of restricting liquidity in the financial system, Obi stresses that this measure won’t spur productivity, particularly in food production, a key driver of inflation in Nigeria. Instead, he advocates for a multifaceted approach, highlighting the urgent need to address insecurity to boost food and crude oil production, thereby stimulating overall economic growth and making essential products more affordable.
In his statement, Obi points out the potential pitfalls of the CBN’s decision, foreseeing a scenario where interest rates soar above 30%, rendering loan repayment unfeasible for many businesses, especially SMEs and manufacturers. He underscores the importance of restoring investor confidence through practical solutions rather than relying on conventional economic theories.
As Nigeria grapples with economic challenges, Obi’s warning serves as a call to action for policymakers to adopt pragmatic measures to address the root causes of inflation and production decline, lest the nation plunges deeper into crisis.
