Police Officer Honoured for Rejecting $17,000 Bribe in High-Profile Organ Trafficking Case

A police superintendent serving in Bayelsa State, Sentome Obi, has drawn national acclaim after he declined a bribe offer of $17,000 from suspects involved in a major organ trafficking and ritual crime investigation. The officer, whose actions have been widely praised as a rare demonstration of integrity within the Nigerian Police Force, was recently rewarded by Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, with a three-bedroom bungalow and a brand-new vehicle.

According to IReporter Online, the bribe was allegedly offered in an attempt to suppress a criminal case involving suspects implicated in organ harvesting, ritual practices, and other illicit activities. Acting on actionable intelligence, Obi and his team arrested the suspects and recovered significant evidence corroborating the reports. The suspects reportedly sought to silence the matter with the large cash inducement.

Despite the substantial offer, Obi maintained his stance, driven, he said, by a commitment to public service and the professional ethics instilled in him by the force. “We are paid by taxpayers. Our job is to serve society with honour,” he stated.

His decision has since earned him not only recognition at the state level but also multiple national commendations. He was named the 2024 Best Police Officer of the Year and received the Inspector General of Police’s award for Integrity. The awards were presented in a high-profile ceremony attended by top-ranking officials, including the Senate President, who represented the Nigerian President.

While acknowledging that his decision to refuse the bribe was met with mixed reactions from his family, Obi said the outcome has vindicated his choice. “Some were unsure at first, but today they’re all proud. Integrity truly pays,” he added.

When asked if he would make the same decision again under similar circumstances, Obi responded without hesitation: “Absolutely. I’ll continue to reject such offers. Who knows—more houses and cars may follow.”

Obi further urged his colleagues in the force to uphold the principles of honour and honesty, emphasizing that the police are a mirror of the society they serve. “It’s not just about money. It’s about who you are, where you come from, and the values you represent,” he concluded.
