Prison Uproar: Inmates Revolt In Jos Over Food Ration Cut

In a dramatic turn of events, inmates at the Correctional Center in Jos, the capital of Plateau State, erupted in protest on Friday, vehemently opposing a proposed reduction in their food ration amidst the prevailing economic challenges in the country.

Reports indicate that the inmates, already grappling with the harsh economic realities, were incensed upon learning about the impending downsizing of their food portions.

According to sources cited by Daily Trust, the protest ensued immediately after the inmates received word of the planned reduction, with their discontent palpable as they refused to comply with directives from custodial officials and boycotted breakfast.

Witnesses described a scene of chaos as the inmates gathered in the prison yard, vociferously airing their grievances, only to be dispersed by tear gas deployed by custodial authorities to restore order.

Confirming the disturbance, Comptroller Raphael Ibinuhi of the Jos Correctional Center attributed the unrest to the soaring cost of goods in the market, which has compelled the contracted food supplier to consider downsizing meal portions.

“The problem has to do with the high cost of goods in the market. The contractor in charge of the foods said they are being forced by the price of food items to reduce the size of the plate of foods,” remarked Ibinuhi.

Expressing his views on the matter, he opined that while the inmates’ frustrations are understandable, the issue of food scarcity and escalating prices is a national concern being addressed by the federal government.

The upheaval underscores the deep-seated impact of economic hardships on vulnerable populations, amplifying the urgency for comprehensive measures to alleviate the plight of citizens, even within correctional facilities.
